A PAN card is essential for every Indian citizen. Not only is it needed to open a bank account or file income tax returns, but itโ€™s also a crucial identification document for various transactions. Getting a PAN (Permanent Account Number) is crucial for all earning individuals and non-individual entities in India. Indian citizens, NRIs, entities incorporated in India, and any other unincorporated entities formed in India must fill out Form 49A to obtain their PAN card.

All foreign residents paying taxes in India, Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), and companies incorporated outside India but operating in India must complete Form 49AA to obtain a PAN card.

When filling out Forms 49A and 49AA, keep these points in mind.

Basic Rules :

The form must be filled out in English. For offline submissions, use block letters and black ink. Fill one letter per box for offline forms. Fields marked with an asterisk (*) are mandatory. Ensure the details on your ID and address proof match the information on the form. Avoid overwriting, and read all instructions at the end of the form.

Signature and Thumb Impression

If using a thumb impression, use your left thumb only. Sign or place your thumb impression across the photo on the left side of the form so that itโ€™s partially on both the photo and the form. Ensure the signature is on the left-side photograph and not the right. This should be clear since it will appear on your PAN card.

Photo

Provide two high-quality photographs of your PAN card as they will be visible on it. Avoid stapling the photos when submitting the offline form.

Ao Code

The AO code indicates your tax jurisdiction. As the applicant, you need to fill out this information. The details include Area Code, AO type, range code, and area number. You can find this information on the NSDL website, at PAN centers, or at the Income Tax office.

You can apply for a PAN card using Forms 49A and 49AA both online and offline.

  • First, visit the NSDL website or UTIITSL website.
  • Choose ‘PAN Card for Indian Citizen/NRI – Form 49A’ if you are an Indian citizen, or ‘PAN Card for Foreign Citizen – Form 49AA’ if you are a foreign citizen.
  • Then, Select the mode of receiving a PAN card and fill in all the details in the form.  
  • Upload the documents and pay the required fees.
  • Submit the application and you will receive an acknowledgement number. 
  • Send the documents via courier or mail to the NSDL or UTIITSL office.
  • Download ‘Form 49A’ or ‘Form 49AA’ from either the Protean website or the Income Tax website.
  • Fill all the application in the form.
  • Include your signature and photograph with the application form.
  • Submit the application form along with the required documents to your nearest PAN center.
  • Pay the required fees for the PAN card application.ย 
  • Then acknowledgement number will be recieve on your mobile.
  • The PAN card will be issued within 15 days once the documents are verified.

The following documents must be attached by an applicant when submitting either form.

1- Proof of Identity

This could include your passport, driver’s license, Aadhaar, etc.

2- Proof of Address

This could include anything like an electricity bill, water bill, passport, Aadhaar, or any other document showing your address.

3- Proof of Date of Birth

This could include your Aadhaar, Voter ID, birth certificate, marksheet, etc.

What’s Section 49A of Income Tax?

There’s no Section 49A in the Income Tax Act. However, Form 49A is an application form that all Indian residents and entities incorporated in India must complete to apply for a PAN card.
